In Costa Rica, you don’t have to find fresh fruit — it finds you!

Where we live in the Western part of Costa Rica, there are huge stores, smaller fruit stands and even just people selling produce along the side of the road. There is so much fruit to choose from, it’s difficult to decide.

This is the largest fruit stand I have ever been to. It is called Country Kitchen in Nicoya.

Where we come from in the Northern US the fruit is processed — oranges are sprayed orange, apples, mangos and bananas are waxed, avocados are picked way too soon and end up rotting from the inside out before they get soft enough to eat.

Not so in Costa Rica. You can find any fruit imaginable, some you have probably never seen. Even on our property there are plantains and lemons, plus a coconut palm at the end of driveway.

You can enjoy different kinds of melons, tomatoes, peppers, bananas and papayas. These fruits and vegetables have never been processed in any way. If you find an avocado it’s most likely ripe, you should eat it that day.

Did I mention the amazing prices? It’s like a free fruit for all. Where else can you get cantaloupe for fifty cents or a bunch of bananas for just a little over a dollar?

I don’t know if any of these are antioxidant super fruit or not. Nothing says organic on it,either because there seems to be do distinction here. Fruit tastes great in wonderful in smoothies, daiquiris, grilled with other vegetables or shallow fried.

If you do not care for fruit in your diet, try again. It might be that you do not like the over processed fruit you get at home but you do like the fresh stuff you an get here! I’m a convert!
